Horrors of War

http://www.horrorsofwarmovie.com/scene6.php This is the first of a series of WEB DOCS on the making of Horrors of War, my first feature film, co-directed by John Whitney, and produced by Phil Garrett and Sean Reid. SCENE 6 was a something that went from 1 line to 2 pages and I thought people might dig seeing how this process worked. I hope you like it. Expect to see many more in the coming months as we put more BEHIND THE SCENES and MOVIEMAKING TIPS videos on the site - Ross http://www.sonnyboo.com http://www.horrorsofwarmovie.com

Amazing

This film looks great. Can't wait to see it. Were you motivated by "Castle Wolfenstein?"

Ok...I watched it again

Ok, so I watched it again with some film pals of mine. They all liked what they saw. Have you guys thought of doing a video game? If you do, can I be a tester? LOL By the way, I did spot one "ooops." In one of the teasers, we are looking through binoculars, then cut to the squad, then to Underwood running. Underwood was looking through the binoculars, yet isn't wearing binoculars when he runs back to report to the squad. May I be so bold as to suggest one quick shot of Underwood looking through the binoculars, taking them away from his face and putting them into a pocket? It just seems odd that we're looking through the binoculars and then see four guys sitting there - none of whom have the binoculars.

Re: Horrors of War

Wolfenstein is a game I played years ago. I like it, but we wanted to do more of a BAND OF BROTHERS action-y thing and make the sci fi/horror elements very differently. H O R R O R S O F W A R Web Documentary - "John's First Day" http://www.horrorsofwarmovie.com/john.php 3 min John Whitney tells the story on what his first day directing on Horrors of War was like. Managing a tank, a jeep, extras, costumed actors and two pages of dialogue in a single shot. This is a series of WEB DOCS on the making of Horrors of War, a WWII action-horror-sci fi story coming soon. These documentaries are DVD-style tidbits showing the behind the scenes workings of a low budget indie film. see also Scene 6 - http://www.horrorsofwarmovie.com/john.php Indie Film Tip: ADR - http://www.horrorsofwarmovie.com/adr.php - Ross http://www.sonnyboo.com http://www.horrorsofwarmovie.com

You may be so bold as to suggest, but I can't go back in time to add something shot in 2004... especially since we locked picture over two months ago & we finished the online edit. I can live with that gaff though. Mostly because the cutaway to the GI's waiting is enough time for Underwood to either drop or hide the binocs before even running BACK to the other guys. It's not echinically a mistake because there is the insinuation of the passage of time. Not every movement or action characters do happens in real time in movies.

Re: Horrors of War

JoBlo.comSays some really great things about Horrors of War! "Think SAVING PRIVATE RYAN meets RE-ANIMATOR meets DOG SOLDIERS, i.e.- a buttload of fun and good times! How cool is that? And after checking out the trailer, I'm sold- this one is gonna blow the other DVD completely away!" How's THAT for a kick arse quote?

Thanks for the tip. It was just confusing as to who was looking through the field glasses. That's all. Ultimately, it's your film so you have the final say. I was merely SUGGESTING a fix for an "oops." You told me that the film was going to be released in the Winter of 2006, so I assumed you were still working on it. Gee, sorry for catching it and sorry for even mentioning it. Sheeesh

Re: Horrors of War

Sorry we aren't using your suggestion. It's the first time I've ever heard that it was even slightly confusing since Pvt. Underwood pretty clearly says "Captain, they've got an MG.42 nest right over...", thus pretty clearly demonstrating that he was the one looking through binoculars at the Germans. I didn't think an insert shot or anything else was needed to sell the point further. It's a difference of opinion and I didn't take it personally, and nothing I'm saying should be either.

Binoculars

I'm not so egotistical that you not using my suggestion is a bad thing. In film school, I was taugfht to tell a story with as little dialogue as possible. The fact that we never see binoculars after seeing a binocular POV is a bit confusing. As someone who loved editing, I just felt as if a shot was missing. We never see Underwood with binoculars either looking through them or wearing them around his neck. So it might be confusing to some as to who is spying on the Germans. You don't see it because you're so close to the project. I just stated what I thought. I had to watch it a few times to actually see who was using the field glasses. In filmmaking, there's ALWAYS re-shoots, ADR, foley, etc done after principle photography. My suggestion was just that... a suggestion. Not an order.

Re: Horrors of War

We just have to agree to disagree.

New?

It's far from new. I saw it back in November. Keep throwing it in our faces. Keep making us think it's fresh. Who knows, maybe the people of this board will sue you for malicious incessant annoyances.

REDFINING INEPTITUDE - the interviews for this one were shot two weeks ago, I'm fairly certain no one saw this in November...

Re: Horrors of War

LOL, a 20min tape about a actors seeing a spider. Man, you must really be running out of ways to shamelessly promote this movie. Like it isn't oversaturated on this site enough. If anyone else was going to see your movie on this site they already know about it, and they would have. I don't think a drawn-out clip about a spider is going to change that.

The sound of the QT trailer is my only real negative. It doesn't sound very good on my Harman/Kardon speakers. Other than that... it looks really good! I may even pick this up when it comes out on DVD. Nice reviews as well! Well done. Mike

Horrors of War WON "BEST

Horrors of War WON "BEST HORROR FEATURE" in 2007 from the Bare Stage Theatre screenings in Red Bluff, California.

Since this was a screening and not a festival, I had no idea there was awards or prizes etc. This came as a shock to me to get the laurel leaves in an email this morning from these guys. That puts HORRORS OF WAR up to 5 awards so far.

Some audiences "get it", meaning the "B" movie aspects, the lack of taking itself too seriously. We weren't making the next installment of a Bruce Willis franchise. We shot out movie before GRINDHOUSE was even an idea. It's too bad the double feature bombed here in the U.S. because we could have ridden those coattails to the bank. Maybe on DVD people will groove on this as a low budget companion to the PLANET TERROR/DEATH PROOF discs. Then again, maybe not.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Just got in a few copies of the DUTCH Horrors of War DVD. They chose the blue Hitler cover art as well. This time actors Joe Lorenzo and Jason Morris made the back cover, along with a 4 shot (a Peter DeLane trademark 4 shot I might add). CLICK HERE to view the bigger DVD art image thingy

It's pretty darn cool to get your own movie from all over the planet. The day I stop getting excited about this kind of thing is the day I should stop doing this. I hope I stay this giddy about filmmaking the rest of my life.
