So, I will admit it. I loved Titanic when it came out. I definately cried both times I saw it in the movie theaters. However, as great as the film was, I have no desire to watch again. Ask me that question in another few years and maybe my answer will change.
A Waste of 3 and a half hours of my life. Just my personal opinion though. I do appreciate that it more or less launched Leo's career, as well as Kate Winslet's. But for the most part, hated it. And I think that it really irks me that its #1 on the all time box office sales list. Although, if you take into consideration inflation, Star Wars does have it beat by a pretty dang good amount. I think the movie really just capitalized on teenage girls ability to drag their boyfriends to a movie multiple times to watch the same thing over and over. I knew a girl who watched it 18 times in theatres. I told her that she wasted 2 and a half days of her life watching a friggin boat sink 18 times. 19 if you include the original Titanic.
I agree with dkisabeth25. I think what people that didn't like the movie don't know how to do is express their feelings about it. look at it this way, the sinking was a tradgedy and many died. Many people lost family members, Mothers, Fathers etc. etc.... This movie is a love story and tends to make a mockery out of the whole event. I mean, how long did they even know each-other? A few days? that kind of makes it unbelievable. And the delusions of grandeur "I'm king of the world"? Come on now, really.
You don't think that a few days is long enough to develop incredibly strong feelings between two people? I met the girl I am with now about 5 years ago on the set of a movie that I was working on. We were both married at the time. From the MOMENT that we spoke to each other, we were instantly in love with each other. In a few days, we were inseparable. We had many of the same interests and were (are) just...in synch with one another. In a few days time it would have been devastating to lose her; to be so close to finding complete happiness only to have it stripped away. Besides, it would be a pretty boring world if hollywood only focused on mundain and usual love stories. As far as the "I'm the king of the world" comment. Jack came from a world of poverty but he was an idealist and felt that there was more to life than what he was living. He got this huge "break" by winning the ticket to ride the Titanic. Don't you think that on the largest ocean liner ever built (at the time), having just met this woman that he feels so strongly for, being surrounded with the high class and breathing the night air while this monster cuts through the ocean waves that he would be on a bit of a high? There has been many times in my life that I have been so overwhelmed with joy or excitement that I yell out something kinda goofy. Wahooooooo!!! for example. Not necessarily trying to convince anybody of anything here. This is how I see it however.
Well, JasonJolliff, I have to agree with one of your points. My wife of 11 years and i only dated a few short months before we wed. I do understand this bond that can be created, my hat's off to you. I just didn't agree with the films aura. Perhaps I am one of the folks i talk about in my post who is "not able to express my feelings about it correctly". I just didn't buy the whole thing, It didn't cause me to cry, and while i am no softy, there have been several movies that have. I am taken back to watching Forest Gump talk to jenny at her gravesite, delivering the gift their son made for her. It just seemed to have a different kind of power to it, but that is a different thread entirely.
I feel the Titanic is a good film with a perfect setting. I think the charcters were a tad over the top and unrealistic. Leo didn't bother me but I didn't care if he died or lived. Kate Winslet wasn't bad but I would have preferred if she died. Billy Zane's character was better, but too vindictive and evil, what happened to plausible villians? Why did this movie even need a villian like him? It cheesed up the storyline. There was enough peril already you didn't need the added goons. James Cameron is a certifiable genius worthy of any award. His use of suspension rivals Speilberg and Scott. But the popuarity of this film pivots off of DiCaprio and his teenage fanbase that went to see it repeatedly. It is after all #1 at the box office nearing 2 billion worldwide. Nothing compares to it's success. Is it too long? Absolutely. Do I care about the old lady who stole the gem? Not at all. But that doesn't mean that this film does not OWN the mainstream box office. Cheers to Cameron. I personally feel Aliens 2 and The Terminator were more my style. BUt I'm glad he got the Oscar for something. Now it's Marty's turn.
Hi all. Ive never ever watched it! I've seen a lot of films but not that one, well i did-only watched the boat sink. The image of the film i was presented with put me off,-the boat sinks! Oh yes and theres a subplot -about love. I like some love stories, but in the end i didnt watch it. Lots of people at the time gave me grief-but there were better films out which i wanted to watch. Thank you for listening, pob.
You say that Titanic was a waste of 3 and a half hours of your life, yea to me persoanlly I really don't get that. You also say that it irks you that it is the number 1 in box office movie of all time but do you really understand why it is. It number 1 becuase pretty much the whole damn world went and saw and fell in love with that film. I mean it was almost in the theatres for a year, so you know right there that they did defiantly get something right! Did it just capitalize on young girls going to see it, you make up your mind about that one. You completly forget though that every single person from every single background make up a movie audience! Maybe there were more teenage girls than any other group and maybe they went more than once to see it but that tells you right there that the director James Cameron and the producers did something EXTREMLY right!
It's obvious that you didn't like the film and that's ok! But when you take into consideration that the film completey stands on it's own as being the biggest box office hit of all time and pretty much the whole damn world fell in LOVE with that film, you have to kinda sit back and say to yourself "Holy Shit, the whole world LOVED that film and I hated it. Maybe I just can't determine what a good film really is"?
Re: Titanic....It's been about 8 years give u'r real opinion....
I love it too. I thought it was amazing. Leo is my favorite male actor. I'm secure...
Re: Titanic....It's been about 8 years give u'r real opinion....
i dont like it , i think it only did well because of all the advertising.

It was horrible! Especially since Kate was so much bigger than Leo, no wonder he drowned.

I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the characters, the dialogue wasn't too bad and the cinematography was good. Was it a tad long? Yes.
