Hey
Hey, Ok, this is my advice to you. If your not serious about writing then don't worry about buying a program. (way to much money for one screenplay) The thing you must do is read books on the subject. Screenwriting, contrary to what many people think it is not a walk in the park. It is a completely different form of writing then most people are used too. If you don't want to go out and get a book (although I strongly recommend it) this is a great website for you to check out. www.screenwriting.info/ You should also look up produced screenplays on the net and see how thay were written. Well I could say a ton more but I think that answers your general question. Later, Amber
Yes...
Take a look at other published screenplays that have been made into movies...and if you want to get really creative go out and rent the movie at the same time and watch it while you are reading the script. If you aren't really serious about writing yourself then the previous post is right. Scriptware programs are way to expensive for people who don't plan on making it a career. You could check out a website...www.scriptbuddy.com. It does have a free membership and you can be working on 3 different scripts at the same time, although, it is only suggested to concentrate on one at a time. It doesn't have a lot of the real in detail options but you setup your scenes, characters (character descriptions) and as your writing it puts it into format for you. I've used it on numerous occasions and I like it. Good Luck!
Re: Im new and havent got a clue
I have alot of experiance. I write scripts of award winning films so I know scripts. A film script layout should look like this: Bob Hey there how you doing. Bob jumps down off the monkey bars. Cut to a man. Hope this helps, Filmmaker.
Format
Hey Fry, I admire Filmmaker's pluck (the guy's only 11! And as he states on all his posts - he's won awards!) - but that's not actual industry standard formatting - you should look at script formatting from actual scripts (the script programs you're talking about - Final Draft, etc - do cost a lot of money, but they are worth it). Check out Drew's script-o-rama: www.script-o-rama.com and download a real screenplay that's in correct format. Of note: it's become more and more accepted that "CUT TO" does not need to be included after each scene. Also - try to refrain from having too many CAMERA ANGLES and other director-related choices in your script, unless you're planning to direct it yourself. Now, it's true you don't HAVE TO have your script in format - but it helps legitimize your project, and quite frankly, the format really works (it is designed to make each script page = approx. 1 minute of screen time). You can also download various templates for Word or what-not - someone just did a post that had a link to a really good writing website... just check out Pob's response in the thread entitled "Quick Question" - the link is: http://www.jengo.8m.com/pages/writers.html Write well Fry. And remember - the first draft is nothing; the fifth draft is everything. Writing is all about re-writing, and Don't Get It Right - Get It Written! WPS
Re: Im new and havent got a clue
Good luck with everything man! A piece of advice I always like to keep in mind is to stay disciplined; let new ideas come to you, but don't stray too far off the main focus of your story. If you allow new thoughts to just come pouring in and hammering away at your story, you'll end up with an incoherent blob. Stick to a path, throw in some creative curve balls, but make sure you come back to your destination.
Re: Im new and havent got a clue
I know you don't want to hear it... but buy the software. If you're serious about getting your script on paper and made into a movie (even a no-budget indie) it will take lots of time and money. If you're not serious enough to get the most basic of tools, you'll probably never get it done. I don't mean to be harsh, but that's the reality... Do you really want to spend your writing time manually formatting page layouts/ page breaks/ multiple tabs. Look for deals on scriptwriting software, then bite the bullet. I can't recommend Filmmakers formatting, but his story seems inspired. No wonder he's won so many awards.
Re:
Syd Field's "Screenplay" is a good place to start and he also has a book I believe is called "The Screenwriters Problem Solver". As far as structure, the programs do cost money but are very helpful. Final Draft, Sophocles, are both ones that I have used. And definitely read scripts, lots and lots of scripts. China Town, Shawshank Redemption are great examples of great screenplays.
