I am a cinema and photography major with a concentration in cinema production at Ithaca College. Although I truly enjoy and am challenged by the curriculum which allows us to start making films our second semester freshman year, I am afraid to admit that the school has gotten too overzealous with its acceptances and there are simply not enough spaces in the courses to facilitate all of the students. For example, I will be a second semester sophomore, not taking any classes in film because they were all filled up and they will not open up a new section. I am not the only student in this situation. In fact, many film students and television/radio students are experiencing this problem. Oftentimes non-park majors are given preference to classes simply because they are a year ahead of the in park majors that need the course. Consequently my schedule and plans for my next 2 years have been thrown off completely for a circumstance that is out of my hands... So, for those of you who are considering Ithaca for film, I do not discourage you. This program is highly reputable, you can get a lot of experience. And we have a fair amount of equipment, high quality cameras at that. There are plenty opportunities for internships and to work on many film crews. But our staff is not all created equal and some professors are better than others...And I don't mean that lightly. AT Ithaca, you win some and you lose some. If you can put up with red tape for miles and miles, and can accept the occasional lousy professor, in lieu of an invaluable experience and reputable diploma, welcome to Ithaca.
