Guns and stuff...

I'm trying to make a zombie movie, and obviously there will be guns in zombie movies. I'm open to different techniques, but I'm looking into blank firing guns. My cousin has a permit to operate them, but some people say they're unsafe up to like 40 feet. That's pretty...not cool. But in any case, does anyone know where to get some good blank firing guns? Like, all I've been able to find are pistols. Does anyone know where to find like assault rifles that fire blanks? I have a really low budget, and I don't have any editing software on my computer, the most I've got is Paint. So...yeah. If anyone knows any alternatives to blanks, please tell me. Otherwise, I guess my cousin will just have to stand back a bit.

Read this thread. It's not even halfway down the page. http://www.filmmaker.com/postt10498.html Blanks are dangerous. Get a permit and a licensed tech, or don't use them.

Re: Guns and stuff...

Since your cousin has a permit to operate firearms then he knows exactly where to get assault type rifles. He would be a better resource than this board. He's right, blanks are very dangerous. VERY. Standing back a bit isn't going to make your actors safe. But then, your cousin knows this so he will again be a big help. As I'm sure your cousin will tell you assault type rifles that fire blacks aren't cheap. Since he has a permit he can rent them so that's going to be your best option. If he doesn't have a regular place where he rents have him contact me. I'm in the process of getting my weapons license (her in California it's really difficult) and I know several rental places around the country. Even then, it's not going to be cheap. Depending on where you live a permit to fire assault type rifles (even loaded with blanks) will require a high insurance rider. But again, you cousin who has a permit knows all this. Where did he suggest you get the rifles?

Re: Guns and stuff...

He actually just rents the guns he uses, he doesn't want to spend limitless amounts of money of a deactivated/blank-firing gun, and I don't blame him. But he did say that somewhere like airgundepot.com might have one or two on there. If not, he said to just browse eBay.

Re: Guns and stuff...

I'm thinking it's just going to be easier to save up and purchase an editing software of some sort. Less expensive than buying the guns and ammo and finding a few other people with permits and bullcrap like that...huzzah for editing software. Thanks for all your help, though, guys.

It's actually 30 feet with a full load unless you're using something like a mini gun - then it's 45 feet. If you need to be shooting at the camera, try using a new sheet of Lexan in front of the camera crew or a smaller piece for the camera itself. Put a furniture moving pad/blanket on anyone in that general area and then remove everyone else from the set. We used to use these specific guns (gas actuated) that fired a burst of flame to represent the muzzle flash, but those guns were expensive and the "ammo" was quite costly. You can still inquire about them at Applied Effects (310) 398-4884. I no longer use them but you might try calling Mike Gibbons at Gibbons, LTD (818) 566-4253. He is the ultimate gun guru and armourer in the business.
