Velvety Smooth Slo-mo from video?

Hey all, First time posting. I'm doing a music video, and as a matter of course, we need Slow motion. I'm trying to figure out the best looking way to do this on a budget without just slowing down the framerate on editing. It's gotta be smoother than whipped butter!!!!! Here are my thoughts: In camera: I can't afford to shoot on film, and I have yet to find an affordable video camera that can increase shooting framerate. Post: Most editing programs have that option to simply double or triple the frames, but that looks jerky. I'm heard of software that will analyse each frame and exrapolate a new one in between, but that's gotta be expensive and time and cpu intensive. So, assuming I can't shoot on film, and easily adjust the frame exposure rate (well easily is a reletive term) what have people found that works pretty well? oh, and bye the bye, you all know the effect I'm lookin for, just take a gnder at any rap video or commercial. Thanks for your help

If you are shooting high def and mastering to standard def you can shoot fielded footage and deinterlace in post. This makes the footage half as high but twice the duration, effectivaly half speed. the loss of resolution isn't terrible if you are shooting HD and mastering SD. To get things going even slower I'd recommend using Twixtor or Retimer. These are plugins for After Effects or Fusion. They actually analyze the footage and create between frames by warping the footage. The results can be quite good. Have fun and go make some movie magic!

The best way to get the look you want is in camera. Call up a rental house and ask for the cheapest camera they have that will do variable frame rates. It'll probably cost you a few hundred a day. Much cheaper than buying. The camera will probably be a Panasonic HVX-200.
