Hello everyone, I'm an amateur editor from Massachusetts looking to break into a more serious and stable video editing career. Until about a month ago I'd been working for the local NBC affiliate as an editor (on a linear system)/videographer, but left to persue a more stable and involved career working at a production house or studio. But now I'm starting to realize I may need a bit more education and experience to break in. Basically I have a reel that consists of a bunch of news stories (pkgs, and vo/sots) that I shot and edited for work, a music video that I shot on my GL2 and edited using Final Cut Express (self taught), and the best of my student films (won a few awards, went to a couple festivals) which I shot with a Handycam and edited with Final Cut Express. I've sent the reel to a few places but so far I haven't had any luck. So as far as I can tell what I should do at the moment to make myself more marketable is buy a new Mac (mine is showing it's age) buy the full Final Cut Studio package, get certified, and possibly get some more education (I was thinking about enrolling at the Center for Digital Imaging and Arts in Waltham, MA). The only problem with this plan is it would probably be quite expensive and I'd rather learn by doing (though many production houses don't seem interested in letting me do this). If anyone can offer me any advice I would greatly appreciate it. The ammount of experience one needs to enter the industry seems overwhelming, but I love editing and would really like to pursue a career doing what I love. Sorry. I know this post ran long. If you made it this far ...Thanks!
Re: Advice on breaking in
I would definitely say don't worry about getting more education. And I'm not sure how it works in Mass, and what type of editing you want to get into, but if you can afford to pay for more education, maybe you would be better off using that money for living expenses and talk to every post house you can and offer to intern for very very little, or for free. And then work your butt off for a few months.
