My existing computer (tricked-out Mac G3 MT) is on it's last legs. I have to buy a new one el quicko, but for now, I can't afford a dual 2 Gig G5 w/23" Cinema Display that I so covet for FC Pro 4 work. I have decided to by something cheaper in the mean time and I've found two really good deals from the same reputable dealer on eBay for the following: - New G4 iMac w/20" display; 1.25 MHz; 768 Mg Ram; 80 Gig Drive, SuperDrive; NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra = $1,999.99 - New G4 PowerBook w/15.2" Display; 1.25 MHz; 512 Mg Ram; 80 Gig Drive, SuperDrive; ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 = $2,295 I know that the iMac is upgrade challenged, but that big screen sure is appealing. On the other hand, if I am able to buy the G5 rig in a few months, the PB would still be useful to own for its portability. Will either work equally well/poorly with FCP? I need the opinions of some cooler heads, but quick!
Re: Emergency Mac Purchase Dilema!
get the iMac. 15" is just too small for efficient editing. besides, do you really need 2 G5's just for editing? I guess if your doing heavy compositing, but I think a G4 is just fine for editing and light to medium compositing. Although, a 23'' display is tempting... The iMac will run fine with FCP, I use an eMac, and thats a step down from the iMac. The laptop should also work fine. If you want the mobility, I suppose you could get the ibook and get the G5 system later. I hope this helps.
