What is this editing technique called

What is the name for the effect/technique where in the transition between two scenes we hear the actor begin talking for the next scene while we are still seeing on screen the finish of the previous scene?[/b]

Yeah, I've also heard it as a "split edit". It's been used to tighten a scene or a transition, but also can have a gimmicky quality. Hitchcock used to do stuff like cut from someone being killed and about to scream to a train whistle that blares over the scream. Then cut to the whistle... W
