The role of women in the film industry.

Hi, I am in the middle of completing research for my A2 Media Studies Critical Research module, about the role of women in the film industry and any possible reasons as to why there seems to be a lack of female directors. I would be very appreciative if anyone would reply giving any views they have, as I need a variety of opinions in order to achieve a successful result. Thanks.

Re: The role of women in the film industry.

The first thing I would wonder is, are there really a lack of female directors? There are probably only 10 or so directors that anyone in the general public could mention my name. Maybe 20 that people interested in movies could name. I would think that there wouldn't be any women in the top 10. In the top 20, maybe 2 or 3. So if your critical research is looking only at famous directors and limiting your research to studio movies, I would say you have a good point. But if you are are researching working directors and including TV and theater. I don't know that you could make a claim that there seems to be a lack of female directors. So what's your criteria? Famous directors that the general public would know or all working directors?

Re: The role of women in the film industry.

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking at all working directors in film, or studio movies, not TV or theatre. Basically I'm hoping to use either Sally Potter or Lynne Ramsay as examples of female directors who have had successful films but are not however, as successful as other directors, even though they have been considered amongst the best directors today. I'm hoping to list the possible reasons as to why this apparent lack of female directors in film has occured, using the two examples mentioned above.

What about Sofia Coppola?

Re: The role of women in the film industry.

A friend, who is a man and a director, once said to me: When a man directs he can yell, scream, be crude, and rude, and get away with it. Because he is man, and he has a vision and, he is a director, and he is admired for it. But when you, a women, are directing and do the same thing, you are just a bitch, and no one likes you! Its harsh, I know, but I think that he was right, and I think its why there are so few well known female directors.

oh and note: I really think that you should look into Penelope Spheeris. Not only is she a great director, she directs films that break away from sterotypes about the kinds of films that women direct. I mean she directed waynes world, and the decline for fucks sake.
