i'm breaking into the camera department, and i want to make sure i have all the necessary/industry standard equipment for any of the camera department jobs. tape measure: do i go with a building type one that is spring loaded, or the soft kind that seamstresses use? markers and tape: what are the best markers and matching colored tape to get? anything else? i've heard of focus pullers using laser pointers to hit their marks on dolly shots and make them easier to see, what are some other handy tricks of the trade and things i'll need? thanks! - gabe
Re: assistant camera equipment?
Sewing style tape measures are usually too short so go with. construction style tape measures. (they still only go to about 30 feet) If you get one of the larger hand cranked retractable types you can get 50 to 100 feet. They are slightly bigger though. Black dry erase markers. Tape a sponge to the cap to help you clean off the slate. As far as spike tape colors go, just get a variety. 4 or 5 rolls if you can. You need a flashlight. It needs to be bright. You need small screwdrivers and a crescent wrench. Lens cleaning tissues, cloth, and fluid. Compressed air or one of those squeeze bulb air cleaners. Permanent markers of various colors, grease pencils, pens, pencils, clipboard and a bag/belt for it all. Here's a whole page full of Assistant Camera tools. http://www.filmtools.com/camassup.html Check out their "Survival Pack" I've ordered from the before. They keep some hard to find stuff in stock and are reliable. Get this book: http://www.amazon.com/Camera-Assistant-Complete-Professional-Handbook/dp... Laser measurers can be helpful, but not necessary. Always carry your regular measuring tape anyway.
