A Good, Reliable Place for Blank Firearms

I am looking for a good, reliable website that sells working, durable, and safe blank firearms that can be used for theatrical productions. I searched on Google, but I would like a website with some good feedback from other filmmakers. I would also like a link to a website for buying squibs. Any help at all is appreciated. Thank you.

Re: A Good, Reliable Place for Blank Firearms

BE CAREFUL! No firearm is "safe" I've seen 3 inch holes put through set pieces from a supposedly "safe" firearm. Probably the best thing to get would be find a prop gun source that completely plugs their barrels. I think sometimes they call them "suicide guns" (cause you can use them in a suicide scene, but I wouldn't do it) The only gun I've seen like that was an old western style .40 caliber. You had to buy special rounds for it that were basically just a primer cap. Sorry I don't have a specific link. As far as buying squibs goes. Don't. Hire someone who's professionally trained to do that sort of work. Or check out the garden sprayer rig at the bottom of this page. http://www.exposure.co.uk/eejit/blood/index.html

Re: A Good, Reliable Place for Blank Firearms

Im a licensed pyrotechnician and I can tell you that you cannot buy squibs on line. They are explosives - small ones, but still explosives. Check Airsoft and Western Stage Props for nice replica weapons. Im going to echo CaptainStubby. There is no such thing as a safe firearm. The user (prop master) needs to be safe.

Firearms

I work as a property master and an armorer. I work with blanks all the time. There are no such things as "safe" firearms. Rental revolvers are real guns without plugs. Semi-auto handguns do incorporate barrel plugs to allow the exit of muzzle flash ONLY. Nowadays, you need an FFL (Federal Firearm License) to rent anything automatic or assault type weapons. To rent blank-firing or replica weapons, you need to be established in the business and own the "Entertainment Industy FFL." We used to be able to rent blank-firing weapons with no waiting period. Without the proper licenses, you'll need to wait 2-weeks to receive the weapon(s) My advice for stage plays would be to use cap guns. We are trained in gun safety and I pride myself in a clean record on movie sets. As far as squibs go, you need a license or powder card for that too. There is a certain way to wire the squibs and certain protocol involved. You might try to get an IATSE local 44 special effects member to donate to your cause. The IATSE local's number is (818) 769-2500. Hope this helps.

It's STILL California

Ok, that's a Northern Cali rental house. The rules of rental houses down here still apply. You still need the proper credential to rent ANY weapon - blank firing or replica. As far as the squibbs go, you need an effects powder card in order to buy them. This limits anyone off th street renting weapons. So hire a qualified effects and/or weapons guy to get the job done correctly.

Actually you only need an FFL (or California Ent. Permit) to take a REAL Firearm (i.e. one that is declared a real gun by ATF). You DON'T need a permit to take a replica (i.e. non firing non gun) or a blank fire only (only the blank firing theatrical guns that have blocked barrels and have never been a real firearm before). Try http://iar-arms.com/ for theatrical blank firing guns (which is different than REAL guns firing blanks). Though it is an added expense, there is a lot to be said to bring someone who is trained on set. I've seen people do unbelievabley stupid things and I've seen trained weapons wranglers literally STOP people from doing stunts or shots which would have caused serious injury or death. Also it keeps the filmmakers from destroying the props. Eye-wink

Gun laws

Golly, I love being corrected by you....it's a nifty treat. I changed the word license to CREDENTIAL. By the way, rental houses down here will NOT rent replica firearms to anyone off the street. While you do not need a permit or license to rent a fake weapon, too many people are doing too many stupid things and getting shot. So to even rent a fake or replica weapon, the prop house must verify you are affiliated with a film project. Too many stupid lawsuits and too many stupid people have made this a neccessity. There...now correct that! And I know the feeling about stopping shots. The prop guy or armorer has the final say and can call cut if the shot is not safe. Just make sure it's put on the production report...LOL

LOL! Sorry about that! It's enough to make a man .... paranoid! Eye-wink It's just the curse that you post more on stuff that I'm interested in. I actually READ your stuff (hmmmm don't know if that's a good admission to make in front of the OTHER posters....) suppose it's better than being ignored.Eye-wink I've seen quite a few posters here completely ignored. hahahahah. You're right about 'credentials'. Whether it be "street cred" or just saying the right things. I always ask 20 questions before I rent ANYTHING to anyone. What is the project? What media? Are you a film school student? What school? What is this project for? Do you have an experienced prop handler on set? Do you have insurance? etc. etc. I don't badger the guy, but I do try to get a feeling that the guy and his crew AREN'T idiots. I've opted NOT to help people who really gave me a super CREEPY feeling. Of course, once people know that you're a real filmmaker (or at least a responsible one) then it's easier to get the stuff. regards Smiling

Re: A Good, Reliable Place for Blank Firearms

Phoenix - I've got an action show coming up in Feb. I could use a good armorer. If I can afford you, I'd love to talk. I'll even answer your 20 questions....

Prefer not to say.

I have the urge - but I dont have the gun. Which is why I need you.

24] Are you shooting on a Hi-8 in your Mother's backyard and doing your final edit on I-movie?
Funny you should mention that. My second feature was shot on Hi8 and part of it was shot in my mothers front yard. However, this was long before iMovie.
Quote:
25] Do you make pretentious art films that are filled with French words?
No. But I once had a character say Denouement.
Quote:
26] Do you use hallucinogenic chemicals?
Only on every third Sunday.
Quote:
27] Do you scream 'Check the Gate!" after having sex with a woman?
Is that a trick question?
Quote:
28] Do you use a boom operator's Wind sock to cover your manhood?
I would - but theyre too small.

Doesnt everyones?
Quote:
30] Do you use the "On Camera Microphone" to capture dialogue being spoken at the BACK of the room?
There isnt an on camera microphone on my Bolex.

I forgot to mention. Any "YES" answer to any of those questions denies your request! Eye-wink
