Getting Started In Animation: Where to begin?

I am interested in getting started in animation for short films. Where should I begin? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I guess the big question is have you ever animated anything? If not, then make a flip book or a little digital stop motion project or even an animated gif. Then make more of them and get better. There are schools to go to for animating. Or you could go talk to an animation studio and ask them where you should start. --Trey

Some people will vomit when I say this, but Flash can get you started on animation. It's not horribly expensive ($700 or so - wow it's getting expensive!), and you can make some pretty decent stuff as a beginner. Loads of Flash animation books exist. It at least would give you an idea whether or not you like it.

Nothing wrong with Flash. It's sometimes a difficult program to wrap your head around, but it does animate. --Trey
