How do you get PA work on a major production?

How do you get PA work on a major studio production? Chicago has been getting more and more film work, but I'm not sure where to even start. Is it something where you directly contact the studio? Is there a place where these gigs are listed? Or...do you just show up and volunteer in an informal manner?

You can try sending a resume to productions that are currently shooting or are in preproduction in your area. Your state's film commission website probably has a list with phone numbers. You can try going to a film equipment rental house and talking to the people there. If they're not too busy, they're generally pretty helpful. The rental house will probably also have an area crew guide. You can try cold calling some people in the departments you're interested in working and just ask if they could use some help. Be honest about your work experience.
