I'm just wondering if anyone has an opinon on which school's Editing program is better? I'm enrolled in IADT for October, but Trebas' editing program looks better. They have Final Cut Pro classes & you get to develop a demo reel. Also, I'd like to know what the employment prospects are? Thanks.
Re: IADT or Trebas for Video Editing (Toronto)?
hey I recently toured the IAOD for editing as well....I am a little sketched by it though, 1. for the amount of loonies it costs to go, and 2. I felt as though when I went they were trying real hard to make a sell...I have had one other friend go there and they complained about how they didn't get enough time to use all the equipment. For that much money you could make a film and learn the whole process on your own, and actually own something in the end, instead of an overpriced certificate. What is your current experience with editing? if you want to discuss, as I wouldn't mind either coz i feel i am in the same boat, email me at drag...@yahoo.co.uk
Re: IADT or Trebas for Video Editing (Toronto)?
Hey Toronto Friends - Yeah, I was kinda freak'd when a friend told me how much IAOD was! Holy crappers! My friend teaches editing at Trebas and he's a great guy - know nothing of the school/costs, etc. though, - but he did a great job post supervising my film. Do any of you guys have Avid experience? WPS
Re: IADT or Trebas for Video Editing (Toronto)?
no experience with avid, although i am in the process of obtaining it. So trebas helps you work on a reel? what goes on the reel? I understand that with IAOD you edit in the last tri-mester someones elses footage, yippie kaiyeah.
Got Some Pro Bono Work
Izm- I have a small DV project that's posting on an Avid - I might need some edit assist help - PM me if you're interested in selling your soul to work for free (just for experience of it!) WPS
Re: IADT or Trebas for Video Editing (Toronto)?
Don't waste your time or money at IADT, they are not looked at very well by producers, post houses or production companies in Toronto. Go to a real college and take the time to learn everyhting about the industry. It will help you, cost less and you will have a more recognized and accepted diploma. I never went to IADT but as a former post manager before coming here to CBC to edit, I can tell you that IADT resumes were always put in the do not call folder....

Careers through Trebas Institutes Post Program
Post-production occupational families fall into the three main categories of Editing (Picture/Sound) and Mixing; Graphics and Effects; and Labs. Keep in mind that career paths in post-production tend to be loose and difficult to categorize because of the fluidity of employment and the changes related to technology.EDITING (PICTURE/SOUND) AND MIXINGFilm Editing The editing team works closely with the director. Using digital nonlinear editing equipment, editors combine selected shots for each scene in sequence and combine these sequences to form a logical and smoothly running story. The team includes the editor and assistant or assistant editors who do a variety of supporting tasks.Sound Design The sound team works with the director and film editor. They choose, cut and synchronize recorded sound elements to the picture employing recording and playback equipment mostly digital equipment The team includes specialized and assistant editors.Music Editing Music Editors work with directors, film editors, music supervisors and sound designers to select music for scenes. They make a temporary track using prerecorded music from CDs for preliminary screenings; assist the composer to develop and/or arrange original music, organize recording sessions, time the final score and synchronize it with the picture. The team also includes assistants.Rerecording Mixing Rerecording mixers work as a team to combine, balance and adjust audio elements, including production sound, dialogue, effects and music into a sound track using the work of various sound editors and the sound designer. Mixers manipulate and combine sounds using a large mixing console and often utilize digital audio workstations. Specialized mixers include Lead (Key) Dialogue Mixer, ADR Mixer, Foley Mixer, Music/Scoring Mixer and Recordist.GRAPHICS AND EFFECTSTitle Design The title design team designs written and graphic material that appears on a film, including the main title graphics, trailer graphics, subtitles and credits. They work with the director and editor.Digital Visual Effects Computer Artists create artistic elements using computers. o 2D Artists (Paint People, Rotoscoping, Texture Painters, Compositors) o 3D Artists (Modeler, Animator, Layout Artist) o Technical Artist (Match Mover, Motion, Lighting, Shader Writers, Effects)LABThe lab team handles a number of technical tasks, which include developing timing, printing film and correcting its characteristics (such as color timing) to bring it to a finished or transfer to video for NLE. Because of the specialization and variation among postproduction jobs, it is advisable to know which area you would like to target and what skills you may need to achieve that career goal.
film schools
I'm an audio/video editor in Toronto. SAVE YOURSELF YOUR MONEY!!! Instead of investing thousands of dollars for tuition and living expenses, buy Final Cut or Avid DV Xpress yourself, read the manuals, find projects to work on to develop your skills. If you own the equipment, you have the option of charging for your services, which are valuable. At the moment, there is not much work in the city and having your own system WILL give you an edge. The general opinion of Trebas throughout Toronto post facilities is not a favorable one. Research and talk to as many people as you can before you consider going to a one or two year program. If you're looking for a program, look at Ryerson or Fanshawe. Hope this helps.
Re: IADT or Trebas for Video Editing (Toronto)?
I've enrolled in IAOD..and now you guys have totally deminished my dreams of that being a good place to go to..i mean i wanted to learn and get my hands into the industry by learning the bits of it..but now im totally scared i wasted money..doesnt anyone have anything good to say about the school
good luck guys finding work
good luck if you think you are going to find work in the industry. The school is a rip off. $15000 for 7 months and the amount of students that graduate the video editing industry is saturatd.... My advice is if you are interested in getting into the industry lessrn it on your own a save the money for your own edint suite.... Cheers
IAOD
Oh by the way I am a graduate of the IAOD. 4 years of bullshit hell trying to find work. A few fulltime gigs some freelance work but if you are not a people person good luck... It is all who you know and networking. Join the avid users group go to the meetings talk to people and get out there and sell yourself... that the only advice I can give... Save the money or even better I will teach you if you want..... Avid final cut whatever...

Re: IAOD
Re: IADT or Trebas for Video Editing (Toronto)?
I am an teacher at IAOD and a graduate. Don't expect the school to neccessarily find you a job. You'll get out of the school what you put into it. But the school does have excellent facilities and 24\7 access to your own Avid system for 9 months and usage thereafter. You might want to go into the school and speak with the programs chair before you listen to people hear that don't know what they are talking about.
Re: IADT or Trebas for Video Editing (Toronto)?
Hello Teacher from IAOD. First of all, I (if you are willing) would like to know what you teach at the Film School. Second. I have gone and visited the school twice now. I have to say that I have never felt so mocked at. The tour guide (lady with a big hairdoo) took me on a tour, showed me all the bells and whistles of your school. Which I must admit, were nice. But when it came down to the meat of the information, she failed miserably. She kept pulling out photocopied, computer print outs of so and so quoted as saying toronto film school is the best. When I asked to see more info on grads from NLE she had nothing. She told me they only accept the best students, when it is obvious that, though the students may have (potential and or talet) it is really down to who has the money. And that is how I felt when I visited your school, that I was in a 'pitch' Anyways. I think if the IAOD considered lowering their costs by a fraction and required that all potential students hand in a demo reel or portfolio of somekind they could really benefit.
Re: IADT or Trebas for Video Editing (Toronto)?
^^ very true, IAOD link me to a site that qouted them on being one of the best schools, which in fact that school is all about money..they don't care if you have talent or not they want money and badly..so they continue to jack up there prices for poor students that don't know what their going into..
Toronto Film School
Trebas is something of an industry joke. With one AVID and a couple of Final Cut Pro units, they hardly compare to the thirty AVIDS and twenty Final Cut Pro Units at the Toronto Film School, which is the Academy of Design and Tech. I find it odd that a CBC employee would trash the Academy on this site when it is a well known the CBC staff was not thrilled with the Aademy moving onto the eighth and first floor of the CBC building. My understanding is that Academy grads are landing jobs because of what they know. Perhaps they are choosing not to work at the CBC because of the arrogance of the CBC staff. Ask why Trebas has so many lawsuits outstanding against the owner, and why Vancouver was shut down by the government.
Re: IADT or Trebas for Video Editing (Toronto)?
Take my advice. If you are serious about working in film or TV, go in as a runner, no experience needed. People will teach you for free and you get to play with the latest equipment. You could do a hundred film courses at the world's best institutions and not get into film or TV. Start at the bottom, work your way up. Get paid for learning.
Re: IADT or Trebas for Video Editing (Toronto)?
As a soon to be graduate of IADT, I feel I should put my two cents in. It is true that the price tag is steep, but the course covers about as much as you would learn in three years at university. Which would cost roughly the same. As for the program itself, it is exactly what the teacher who posted earlier had said "you get from the school what you put in". If you expect the school to find you a job, you are not only in the wrong school, you are in the wrong profession. You are not going to find a better group of teachers at any post secondary school, and they honestly care (as I found out one day when I forgot my bus pass and one teacher offered to give me the money to get home!) you do not find this at every institution. This is a great school to attend if you are serious about editing. You have 24/hr access to the equipment, and contrary to some of the posts on this site, you do cut a demo reel in the third term. Sure the school has administration problems, but I've been to 3 post secondary schools and it is not the only one. I am not against learning the programs on your own. Trust me, i did it myself before coming here, but in my opinion this is a great alternative. Good Luck everybody
Re: IADT or Trebas for Video Editing (Toronto)?
I'm am current;y attending the Toronto Flim School. This place is amazing, I love it, It's alot of hard work, but if you have a passion for the industy, it's nothing. The teachers hear are soo awsome and easy to get along with, and the have alot of experience. yeah, it does cost alot but it's cheaper than going out and making a film on your own with no experience. here you get taught properly and you get unlimited use of the equiptment. any other questions? I'll try to answer beav...@hotmail.com
Universities?
What about post production coures offered at York, Humber or Ryerson? They seem to have decent facilities at a fraction of the cost that Trebus or IAOD. Has anyone heard good/bad things about any of their programs. Please Post or email me at scot...@hotmail.com Thanks
Re: IADT or Trebas for Video Editing (Toronto)?
for the editing program, IADT is not a good place 2 go, but for filmmaking, it is a real good place. U can use all equipments 4 free, and they r real industrial equipments.
IADT opinions
I am a graduate of IADT as well as some of the other people on this board. Once again, I totally agree that "whatever you put in, you get out". If you just go and do the assignments and then go home, you are wasting money. But the school cannot be beat for accessibility to equipment and knowledgeable instructors. You cannot beat having your own Avid (MAYBE sharing with one other person) and 24 hour access. And the department chair, Aric Whittom is knowledgeable, kind, patient, and helpful beyond the call of duty. The best thing is to go, do the assignments, and NETWORK WITH THE TV/FILM PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT. THAT is where the shcool should invest it's energy, too, but you can handle it yourself. You will cut student films and learn more about the craft of editing and the way Avid works than if you just attend classes. Also, GET AN INTERNSHIP WHILE IN SCHOOL. It's totally manageable and you'll learn a lot that compliments what you're learning in school. And yes, the job placement program is a JOKE, but don't let that stop you. Forge a reputation at the school, network, do your internship, and pound the pavement.
Trebas MTL is also Bullshit.
I graduated from Trebas in 2001, sound design is saturated and 11000 $ is just for the paper at the end. Keep your job and study BY YOURSELF. Stop grossing their bank account. - Nick frustrated since 2001
Re: IADT or Trebas for Video Editing (Toronto)?
i went to Iaod years ago ..graduated and found a career for myself in the industry. Schools what you make it to be honest. Use the studio time to cut projects on the side , which is what I did. In fact teachers encourage it. Choose interesting projects and charge $. The teachers when I went there were really knowledgeable and knew the rhetoric and technology of filmmaking.
Re: IADT or Trebas for Video Editing (Toronto)?
me and a buddy are gonna be going to Trebas in October. only problem is, we dont know how to register. how did you guys get in?
What about post production courses?
HI!I have been working for a while and decided to go back to school to learn something that I think I would like and be good at... Editing/Mixing seemed to be alright but now that I found out all this mess about the big schools, I am just so confused about what to do! I didn't registered anywhere yet but I am wondering about those courses offered at Humber, York and Ryerson...How are they perceived in the industry? Are they as valid ? Would they be sufficient to equipt myself well enough to work in this industry? Thanks for your help.
